Wolin seokbo(月印釋譜), Volume 1, is the opening volume of a vernacular Buddhist compilation that King Sejo re‑edited and published in woodblock print form in 1459 by integrating Seokbo-sangjeol(釋譜詳節)—completed in 1447 under King Sejong’s command to Prince Suyang—with Wolin-cheongang-jigok(月印千江之曲), a cycle of hymnic narrative verses composed by King Sejong on the basis of that earlier work. The formal head title(gweonduje) reads Wolin-cheongang-jigok Seokbo-sangjeol(月印千江之曲釋譜詳節), although the work is commonly known as Wolin seokbo in line with the running title in the page headers and the cover title.

The extant Huibangsa Temple copy is a recut woodblock edition printed in 1568 (the 1st year of King Seonjo’s reign), produced at Huibangsa(喜方寺) on the basis of the 1459 first edition. Volume 1 consists of 108 folios. Its opening section comprises, in sequence, a single folio bearing a “votive tablet diagram”(wonpaedo, 願牌圖), a vernacular Korean rendering of the Hunminjeongeum “Explanations and Examples” (Yeuipyeon, 例義篇) attributed to King Sejong (folios 1–15), eight folios of “Eight Events” illustrations (Palsangdo, 八相圖), the “Preface to Seokbo-sangjeol” (approximately folios 1–6), and the royal “Preface to Wolin seokbo”(extending across a further series of folios). The main narrative section that follows (the remaining folios) treats the early life of the Buddha—his birth as a prince, upbringing, marriage, renunciation prompted by the Four Sights, and the initial stages of ascetic practice—consistently pairing Wolin-cheongang-jigok’s song‑like narrative with the exegetical prose of Seokbo-sangjeol. This structure exemplifies the characteristic Wolin seokbo editorial system in which hymnic verse and prose commentary are presented in coordinated juxtaposition on the same page.

A distinctive bibliographical feature of the Huibangsa edition is the insertion of two blank leaves to compensate for losses in the corresponding portion of the Wolin-cheongang-jigok tradition, specifically the missing folios usually identified as numbers 39–40 and 47–48 of Volume 1. These intentional blanks simultaneously acknowledge lacunae in the exemplar and preserve the continuity and foliation of the physical book. The concentration at the beginning of the volume of the Hunminjeongeum vernacular text, prefatory materials, and Eight‑Events illustrations also indicates that Volume 1 was treated as a core volume for recutting and reissuing, reflecting its programmatic role as the opening of the compilation and as a locus of foundational paratexts.

From the standpoint of Korean historical linguistics, the Huibangsa Volume 1 is a 1568 recut edition rooted in the orthographic norms of Middle Korean as reflected in the 1459 first edition, yet it also preserves signs of linguistic change characteristic of the mid‑sixteenth century. In the Hunminjeongeum-related section, tone marks(bangjeom) are used with relative consistency, whereas in the main text their omission becomes more frequent; at the same time, the use of obsolete letters such as ㆆ and ㆁ tends to decrease. Nonetheless, repeated marking of the nominative particle ㅣ and certain auxiliary‑verb combinations maintain traits associated with the first‑edition lineage, while loosened orthographic practice in other locations reflects transitional tendencies in the shift from Middle Korean toward Early Modern Korean.

Accordingly, Wolin seokbo, Volume 1, preserved at Huibangsa Temple, is an important resource for integrated study of Buddhist narrative, early Hangul vernacularization associated with Hunminjeongeum, linguistic change observable through recut editions, and the compilation and transmission of Joseon‑period Buddhist literature.
